Dear Japanese colleagues,

It is a pleasure and honor to greet you at the beginning of year 2006 on behalf of directors and co-directors of Ian Donald Inter-University School of Medical Ultrasound. We all are at the beginning of third millennium with all of the challenges which living generations are expected. Globalization is both inevitable and usually desirable and contains advantages and disadvantages issues. It is a source of both hope and apprehension and is an accelerating process in flow of information, technology, goods and services as well as production means. It refers to the process of increasing inter-connectedness between societies such that events in one part of the world increasingly have effects on peoples and societies far away. Globalization has a complex influence on ultrasound diagnosis. The bonds that link ultrasonographers together transcend geographic, political, religious and lingual differences, resulting in a globalization that optimizes care of the woman, mother and their fetus as a person and patient. In this pursuit we could not follow better example in globalization in medicine than establishment of Ian Donald Inter-University School of Medical Ultrasound 24 years ago. The Ian Donald School is a success story in the worldwide education of physicians in state-of-the-art imaging. There are now 22 international branches of this distinguished course. All course directors and speakers volunteer their valuable time and effort because of their love of education. Japanese branch is one of the most active being so successfully leaded by School Director Prof. Kazuo Maeda and Secretary General of the School Dr. Ritsuko Pooh. It is our pleasure to see Prof. Maeda and Dr. Pooh evolving as international leaders in the years to come. We look forward to welcoming Japanese colleagues for the next meetings of their Ian Donald branch. We are proud to have you with us.
